Tour Barcelona Lourdes

Tour Barcelona – Lourdes – 3 days trip to visit Lourdes. We will travel along the picturesque Costa Brava to France, where we will stop to visit the city of Carcassonne, where we will visit the largest and best preserved in the world medieval fortification . It was around the year 100 BC, when the Romans built the first walls of what would eventually be the fortified citadel of Carcassonne. The legend says that the Holy Grail may be hidden in there.

Back to Barcelona after spending one full day in Lourdes. We will visit the monastery of Santa María de Montserrat, where is located the statue of the black Virgin Mary, popularly known as La Moreneta, the saint patron of Catalonia. According to legend, a small group of shepherd children saw a bright light descending from the sky in the Montserrat mountains. When a mountain’s cave was explored by the religious elders of the community, they found an image of the Virgin Mary. And from that moment on, the cave became a holy sanctuary for religious pilgrims.

Travel Program Tour Barcelona Lourdes

Day 1: Barcelona – Carcassonne – Lourdes

We will travel in air-conditioned coaches along the picturesque Costa Brava to France, where we will stop to visit the city of Carcassonne with a magnificent medieval fortification dominating the surrounding countryside. A perfect conserved medieval city has been declared world heritage of humanity and its a one of the most popular tourist destinations, drawing an average of three million visitors yearly.

The first signs of settlement in this region have been dated to about 3500 BC, but the hill site of Carsac – a Celtic place-name that has been retained at other sites in the south – became an important trading place in the 6th century BC. Carcassonne became strategically identified when the Romans fortified the hilltop around 100 BC.

Day 2: Lourdes

Free day that you can dedicate to participate in religious events, individual prayer or visit the sites of interest.

Visiting Lourdes – one of the world’s largest centers of Marian devotion and pilgrimage destination, visited annually by 6 million people from all over the world. The sanctuary of Lourdes includes the basilicas of the Immaculate Conception, that of Our Lady of the Rosary and that of Saint Pius X, as well as the Grotto of the Apparitions, where the Virgin appeared to Bernadette.

In 1858 from February 11 to July 16, a 14-year-old peasant girl, called Bernadette Soubirous, saw a vision of Virgin Mary. The vision was of Mary standing next to a rose bush at the entrance to the Massabielle grotto, on the left bank of the stream. Bernadette saw this vision 7 times. She was told that a spring would appear, and that people were to come to be healed.

Day 3: Lourdes – Montserrat – Barcelona

After breakfast, we start return trip back to Barcelona, stopping on the way to visit Montserrat, where is allocated a Benedictine Abbey. The abbey hosts the Virgin of Montserrat sanctuary (Mare de Déu de Montserrat).

The 17th century basilica contains a statue of black Madonna – “La Moreneta” (“the little dark one”) – Patron Saint of Catalonia. Legends says that it was carved in Jerusalem at the beginning of the religion. Hidden from the Moors, it was miraculously found in one of the caves of the Montserrat massif in the 9th century.

In 2001 renovators observed that the black hands and face of La Moreneta had over the centuries undergone a change in color. They attribute the change—from a lighter tone to black—either to prolonged exposure to candle smoke or a chemical reaction caused by a varnish used as a paint sealant. The statue was repainted black by successive generations of restorers.
